Note: The Van Loons of Plymouth were probably descended from the Van Leuwen-Van Leuven family of Kingston (Esopus), Ulster County, New York, through Nicholas and Rachel Van Loon of Loonenburgh, Albany County, New York. His will, made at Loonenburgh on Sept. 8, 1748, names his wife, Rachel, and children Jurie (George), Isaac, William, Mathys (Matthias), Abraham, Mary (Mrs. Casper van Hosen) and Elsie. Matthias was in Plymouth by 1776, when his name appears on Plymouth District tax lists, and is listed in Luzerne County in the 1790 census. Matthias van Loon's will, probated in Plymouth on Jan. 28, 1806, lists his wife Rebekah, his son Evert, deceased, and additional children Nicholas, Abram, and Catherine Roberts (probably the wife of Hezekiah Roberts). Matthias' son, Abram, was born in 1774 and died May 25, 1838; he married Elizabeth Davenport, daughter of Thomas and Charity Lamoreaux Davenport of Plymouth. Elizabeth was born on Dec. 4, 1774 and died June 19, 1848. Abram, Elizabeth, and some of their children are buried in the Swartwood cemetery, Exeter Township. Among their children were daughters Rebecca (1799-1856), who married Isaac Smith; Hannah (1806-1884) who married Morehouse Smith, Isaac's brother; and Catharine (1809-1893), who married Dr. Alfred Brace. Given the cemetery information, listed below, it is assumed that this Abram and Elizabeth are Susanna's parents. Nicholas was in Plymouth by 1787, and is also listed in the 1790 census. He married Experience Parks. Abraham may have come to Plymouth around 1793, when he and Nicholas bought land there from Benjamin Harvey; he is listed as a taxpayer in 1796. An Abraham van Loon was listed in the town of Woodstock, Ulster County, NY in 1790; in his family were five males over 16 and five females. An Abraham van Loon died in Plymouth Pa in Sept. 1804. (Blair, Williams T. The Michael Shoemaker book. Scranton: International Textbook Press, 1924, p. 451) Cemetery records for Forest Hill Cemetery near Falls, where Samuel Snell is also buried, include burials for Abraham VanLoon, who died May 25, 1838, aged 64 years (which would make his birthdate 1774) and his wife, Elizabeth VanLoon, who died June 19, 1848, aged 73 years, 6 months and 15 days (which would make her birthdate 1775). It appears that this is the same Abram and Elizabeth mentioned above. It is assumed that these are Susannah's parents. The 1830 census lists Abraham van Lone in Exeter Township, Luzerne County. Susanna Snell bought land in Franklin Township from Thomas Hadley et all; the deed was dated Jan. 16, 1850 and recorded April 6, 1850. The information in the grantee index was all that was available; no deed record was found.
