Notes
a. Note:   Herbert Snell attended Scranton Technical High School and Mercersburg Academy, and was a football standout at both places. He also coached the Tech basketball squad, and played basketball for St. Thomas' College. He attended Dickinson College on a football scholarship, starting out in the law school, and then enrolling in the undergraduate college. He played tackle, and was captain of the 1926 team. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He went on to be an assistant football coach under Bill Ullery for two years at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa. He eventually received his degree from Susquehanna in June 1933.
He married Emma Louise Zitzelman at the Ridge Avenue Methodist Church in Harrisburg, Pa. on April 28, 1934. She was the daughter of Christian F.T. Zitzelman and Louise Sonntag Zitzelman, and had been working as a secretary for the Scranton Public Schools. According to their wedding announcement, the service was performed by Rev. J. Resler Shulz, a fraternity brother of the groom's. The bride wore "a wool ensemble of deep brown with a large brown cartwheel hat." Ada Klugh (Mrs. Robert) Walsh of Scranton was matron of honor; Ellsworth Keller (later fondly known to the family as "Uncle Kel") was best man. A wedding breakfast followed at the Harrisburger Hotel.
After the wedding, they moved to Coraopolis, Pa., where Herbert had been employed by the school district as a teacher of commercial law and history in the high school. He also became a football and basketball coach. A Scranton paper bemoaned this fact: "'tis an indictment against Scranton, and a crime against sports in general, that Herb Snell should have to wait 10 years to get a senior coaching assignment, and then out in little Coraopolisfor the man is a positive genius" They were to have three daughters: Barbara Louise, born Oct. 24, 1939; Susan Jane, born January 3, 1943; and Nancy Ellen, born August 11, 1946. Herb eventually became principal of the Coraopolis Junior High School. Upon his retirement in 1968, he and Louise moved to Tunkhannock, Pa. They later lived at Passavant Health Center in Zelienople Pa. Herb died on Sept. 30, 1987 and Louise on Feb. 23, 1990. Both are buried in Sewickley Cemetery, Sewickley, Pa.
