Note: John Reynolds Powers was always referred to as John R., on the census, in deeds and on his gravestone, with his middle name only written out on the back of a photograph. He was only 14 years old when his father died and seems to be the child who stepped in and ran the family grist mill in Petersburgh, NY. He also was a farmer throughout his lifetime. He had 1 older sister, 3 younger sisters, and 2 younger brothers, so it must have been very hard for him to be the male head of such a large household at such a young age. His folks' farm was next door to his uncle Noel Reynolds and John and his wife helped take care of this uncle until his death in 1867, which is known from testimony dealing with Noel Reynold's will. He was 35 years of age when his first child was born, evidently not marrying until most of his siblings were grown. Census records show that he may have moved from Petersburgh, NY to Sunderland, VT. with a John Powers on the 1880 census with wife, Angeline and a few of the children, but the ages are wrong. We do know by the deed below that he and Angeline had owned land in Sunderland, VT in 1882. John R. and wife Angeline are buried near another of their sons, John H. and his wife in a cemetery in nearby So. Arlington, VT.

DEED - Page 374 - 29 Apr 1882 - Recorded 8 May 1882 - Noel E. and Helen Powers sold to John R. Powers (Father) land, House and barn near Chiesel Shops in Sunderland for $1000.
DEED - Page 359 - 8 May 1882 - John R. and Angeline Powers sold above land (100 rods) for $300 to A. G. Rogers of Greenwich, Wash. Co., NY- this to be paid fo in timely payments which must not have been paid for land is resold re: below.
DEED - Page 391 - 7 July 1893 - Angeline Powers of N. Adams, MA and E. G. Bacon of Sunderland sell above land for $275 to William Johnson.
