Note: collector. He would be gone for a couple days at a time. His grandson and namesake, John LaRiviere, remembers his grandpa as being fairly tall with a pot belly, heavy black eyebrows, balding with a fringe of black hair, and hair in his ears. He only saw him twice in his lifetime, once when he was three years old and John Brown had come to Longview for his daughter's funeral, and once when he was 14 or 15. During the first visit, he remembers sitting on his grandpas lap. John Brown wore a vest with a pocket watch in one pocket and a knife in the other. He'd wanted to play with the knife so badly, but his grandpa told him he'd cut himself. He promised to be careful, and with admonishments not to open it, he got to play with the knife. He immediately took it into the bathroom, openned it and cut himself. He dropped it in the bathtub and his grandpa heard the clang and knew right away what he'd done. The 1920 Federal Census shows J.R. Brown (57), his wife Marie (58) and his stepmother Matilda (81) residing in Wabasha, MN. His occupation is train engineer. His parents were born in New York. His wife's father was from France and her mother was from Canada.
Note: John Robert Brown worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a ticket
