Note: 1843 census of Bissen, Luxembourg lists the birth date of Nicholas as December 20, 1839. John and Susanna were married in January of 1840. However, a copy of the birth registration for Nicholas lists his date of birth as January 8, 1839 and indicates that Nicholas was the illegitimate son of Susanna Petesch. The birth was reported by Susanna's father Nicholas. It makes no mention of the father of the child. Marriage records from Holy Cross church indicate that on November 11, 1867 Nicholas Carls, son of John Carls and deceased Susanna Peters (Petesch), married Anna Wieker. Another noteworthy item about Nicholas: He was a member of Company G, 2nd Regiment Cavalry of the Civil War. Volunteered December 28, 1861, wounded January 8, 1863 at Springfield, Missouri and discharged April 15, 1863 because of wounds. After farming in the town of Belgium for a few years, Nicholas and his family moved to Wabasha, Minnesota which is located on the Mississippi river south of Minneapolis. He received 160 acres of homestead land in the Wabasha area in 1882. Nicholas and Anna had at least 5 children. One son was buried in Wabasha in 1875. Another son became pharmacist and remained in the Wabasha area. The 1880 and 1900 census lists Nicholas as a saloon keeper. He lived on 4th Street in Wabasha and owned the house free and clear.
