Notes
a. Note:   New York September 11, 1847 on the ship Bark Anversoid. The members of the Karels family listed with there ages were: John 33, Susanna 27, Nicolas 8, Franz 6, John 4, Mickel 2, Franz 1/2. The spelling of the family name has had many variations (Karrels, Karels, Karls, Carrels, Carels, Carls) on church and civil records in Luxembourg and Ozaukee county. According to tradition from descendants in South Dakota, John's nickname in the Luxembourg language was SCHWARTZHONNUS (black John), because of his dark complexion
After John and his wife Susanna and children arrived, they settled in Ozaukee County, although at that time what is now Ozaukee County was part of Washington County. In 1854, John purchased several small parcels in the towns of Belgium and Port Washington. John continued to make land purchases for about the next 25 years. Much of this land is still part of the "homestead" that is owned by ancestors of John. During their first 10 years in Ozaukee county the family of John and Susanna continued to grow. The 1870 US census indicates that John had a new wife, Catherine, and an addition child, John Baptiste age 3 in the household. His previous wife, Susanna, died in 1865. Some of the older children had been married and left the household by that time. John died of heart disease in 1902 at the age of 89 in Milwaukee at the home of his son Nicholas.
Two of John's son, Michael and Baptiste, "disappeared" after the 1870 census. A relative from South Dakota said that she heard that one of the boys went to the California for the gold rush and was never heard from again.
Three of John's sons, Theodore, Henry, and the younger Mathias went to South Dakota where they became cowboys and ranchers.
Mary moved to South Dakota and sons John and George moved to Wyoming.
The rest of the children remained in the area.
