"In the year 1806 on the 10th day of December at 10 am before the mayor of Bissen appeared Mathias Carls age 23, born in Beaufort, Luxembourg, farm worker, living in Bissen, widower of deceased Elizabeth Wilmes, adult son of the deceased George Carls, who died at Beaufort April 4, 1793 as established by the death record delivered by the mayor of Beaufort on December 9, 1806, and the deceased Magdalena Baustert who died at Beaufort February 12, 1795 as established by the death record delivered by the mayor of Beaufort on December 9, 1806, and Miss Elizabeth Hiltgen, age 30 years, born in Bissen, maid servant, adult daughter of deceased Marie Stumpl died in Bissen July 9, 1776 as established by the death certificate delivered to the mayor of Bissen July 9, 1806, and William Hiltgen farmer from Bissen, here present and consenting. . . and which publications have been made at the principal gate of this town hall on Sunday, November 23, 1806 and on the last Sunday of November, 1806, and no opposition to said marriage . . . and that Mathias Carls and Elizabeth Hiltgen are united in marriage in the presence of Mike Kline, 38, farm worker Bissen and friend of the parties, Francis Hiltgen age 30 years, laborer Bissen, brother of the bride, Frances Krappes 34, tanner of Bissen friend of the parties and Andre Thill 48, tanner of Bissen also a friend of the parties . . ." Mathias and his first wife Elizabeth Wilmes were married May 21, 1804. They had a son Jean (French version of John) born in August 1804 who died in January 1805. They had another son Jean born February 1806. Elizabeth died when she was only 21 years old, 10 days after the birth of Jean. Jean survived to adulthood and married in 1832. Mathias, who was born in Beaufort June 19, 1783, appears to be the youngest of six children of George Carels and Magdalena Baustert who were married in Beaufort July 17, 1771.
