Mathias and his first wife Elizabeth Wilmes were married May 21, 1804. They had a son Jean (French version of John) born in August 1804 who died in January 1805. They had another son Jean born February 1806. Elizabeth died when she was only 21 years old, 10 days after the birth of Jean. Jean survived to adulthood and married in 1832.
Mathias, who was born in Beaufort June 19, 1783, appears to be the youngest of six children of George Carels and Magdalena Baustert who were married in Beaufort July 17, 1771.
