Note: nurses' aid. At age 24, she married Peter Henry LARIVIERE. Pete, son of Peter Henry LaRiviere and Harriet Buisson was born in March of 1857 or 1858. His father's trade is listed on census records as "voyager" and his mother is listed as a "Sioux Indian". Mary and Peter had three children: Harriet Ann LaRiviere (Born December 1892, Ignatius Peter LaRiviere (Born November 1894), and Peter Henry LaRiviere (born April 1, 1896). On November 28, 1895, after just three years of marriage, Peter died of a heart attack. He was only 42 years old. Mary was five months pregnant with their youngest child at the time of her husband's death. She moved in with her parents, but after the baby was born, she just couldn't handle three small children. Her parents raised the youngest child. The 1920 Federal Census shows Mary LaRiviere (51) and her son Peter (23) residing on S. 4th Street in Wabasha. This was her parents old house. Peter got married later that same year. After Peter's marriage, Mary moved in with her daughter Harriet's family in Brookings, S.D. According to family stories, Mary had a difficult personality and was not easy to get along with. When her son Peter's wife died in 1928, leaving four small children, Mary moved to Longview, Washington to assist with their care. Mary died on 24 Nov 1956 in Longview, Washington. She was buried on 28 Nov 1956 in Longview Memorial Park.
