1. Title: Gravestone

Notes
a. Note: Military Service: (1) enlisted for 8 months 5 May 1775 in Capt. Elliott's Company in CT Regiment commanded by Col. Putnam and discharged at Cambridge Jan 1776;
  (2) enlisted 1 April 1776 into Continental Service for one year in Capt. Curtis's Company in Col. William Shepard's Regiment of the State of Massachusetts and discharged in Ramypaw?, NJ between 1776-1777;;
  (3) enlisted 1 Feb 1777 as an artificer under Lieut. Jewitt under the immediate command of Jeduthan Baldwin and discharged at Morristown, NJ; and
  (4) Enlisted 1 May 1780 in Capt. Joseph Brown's Company in Col. Jeremiah Olney's Regiment of the State of Rhode Island for ten months and discharged at Saratoga, NY 1 February 1781.
  It is said that he also participated in the War of 1812, but no servce records has been found.
  In his application for military pension, he mentioned wife Rebecca and two sons, George W. and Abiel. Affidavits were signed by John Younglove, Azariah Ellithorpe, and Samuel Blake. Azariah stated that Asa lived in the same house in Thompson, Windham, CT in 1775.
  After his death, his son Abiel, resident of Royalton, Niagara, NY and administrator of estate, applied on September 5, 1823 for military pension still owed to him in the sum of $41.60. This application stated that Asa had been living in Vermont until the last five years when he lived in Shelby, Genesee, NY. The powers of administration were given to Abiel on same date, so it seems evident that he applied for administration of the estate solely for the purpose of obtaining the outstanding military pension. No probate record is found at Genesee County, NY.
  From: "The Official History of Guilford, Vermont":
  Pg 276: Asa Bowen and Nahum Cutler purchased one-hal interest in some property in Guilford ca 1794. In 1805 this interest was sold to John W. Blake. This land was part of the same land purchased by John Younglove, Azaraih Ellihtopre, and Abigail Atowwd. (Kah's note: Abigail was sister to John Younglove.)
  Pg 282: A distillery was built by Nahum Cutler about 1800 in Guilford and was owned by him in partnership with Asa Bowen and Levi Robbins. This is probably the same land as on page 272 above or the same as that on page 292 below.
  Pg 292: Jasper Partridge sold the south half of a lot in 1803 to Levi Robbins of Hartford, Conn., who in partnership with Nahum Cutler and Asa Bowen, operated a distillery. In 1806 it was sold to Heman Bans and Gilbert Denison.
  Pg 298: Phineas Rice deeded a 100-acre lot No. 18, in School District No. 4 to Asa Bowen in 1797 who then deeded it in 1801 to Jonathan Russell.
  After his death, his son Abiel, as adm of his estate, applied for his overdue pension. Abiel mentioned in his petition that his father had lived in Vermont until the past five years when he lived in NY.
  Undoubtedly they had more children than those listed here. Only George W. and Abiel had been proved (by his pension application). Based on strong circumstantial evidence, it is likely Nancy, Asa Jr, and Permelia were his children also.
  1790 Federal Census for Thompson, Windham, CT: 1 male 16+, two males under 16, 4 females. His next door neighbor is Jesse Ormsby, 1-1-1. Seven doors away is Nathaniel Elithorp, 3-0-3, and next door to Nathaniel is Henry Elithorp, 2-3-3. Based on the Bowen enumeration here and information known so far on children born after 1790, the list of their children are arranged as listed here. The name of his speculated children, Jesse, is interjected here only because Asa's next door neighbor here in this 1790 Census was Jesse Ormsby.
  In Ellen Larned's History of Windham County, Connecticut on page, there is reference that an Asaph Bowen was blocking a public road around Thompson-Woodstock around 1787, causing several townspeople to complain. It is not known if this Asaph is our subject Asa.
  LAND DEEDS IN CT:
  It does not appear that Asa owned land in his own name while in Connecticut. Whatever alnds he had in his name were his wife's. She inherited them from that portion of her grandfather's estate that went to his son Henry Ellithorp, Jr., who died shortly after his father did.
  Thompson, Windham Co, CT, grantor deeds: Azariah Elithorp of Guilford, VT & Asa & Rebekah Bowen and Experience Elithorp of Thompson sold to Joseph Town Jr of Thompson 14 acres in Thompson being all the land that fell to the subscribers by their Honored father Henry Elithorp out of their grandfather's estate 4 Aug 1793, recorded 16 oCT 1793. (2:40)
  Asa & Rebecka Bowen & Experience O. Elithorp of Thompson sold to Jesse Ormsby of Thompson 20 acres in Thompson 24 Aug 1793, recorded 5 Jan 1795. (2:137)
  Asa & Rebecka Bowen and Experience Elithorp of Thompson to Jacob Wight (Wright?) of Thompson 14 acres in Thompson 26 Aug 1793, recorded 9 Nov 1794. (2:258)
  There are also other Bowen deeds at roughly the same time, but it is not known if these other Bowens are related to Asa:
  Stephen Bowen and wife Anna of Glocester, RI to Samuel Eddy of same - all his land and farm where he now lives in Glocester and a little part on Thompson 85 acres 14 April 1790, recorded 20 Oct 1790 (2:16).
  Richard Bowen to Noadiah Russell, recorded 28 April 1788 (1:257). Ephraim Bowen Jr to William Wall, recorded 15 Nov 1791 (2:34).
