a. Note:   n medicine in Shelby. He studied medicine at Middleport, NY and was graduated Fairfield Medical College. he purchased a farm in West shelby. He also resided at Royalton, Niagara, NY where he had filed a petition as his father's estate administrator in 1823 for his overdue military pension.
  There is an article in "Landmarks of Orleans Co, New York," edited by Hon. Isaac S. Signore of Albion, NY, 1894, pg 143:
  "Dr. Abiel Bowen was born at Guilford, Vermont in 1798, and came to Western New York with his father's family early in the present century. He stufied medicine at Middleport, N.Y., and was graduated at Fairfield Medical College. He engaged in practice in Shelby, and in 1828 established himself at West Shelby, where he purchased a farm. He practiced medicine there till about 1840. He died in 1847. In 1826 he married Anna S. Cone, a native of Vermont, born in 1803. She died in 1852. They had seven children, of whom two died young. Anna S. Bowen was a teacher in the West many years, and was literary teacher in the Institution for the Blind for nine years. Adna was an able lawyer, and practiced in Medina, N.Y., where he died in 1883. George is an eminent lawyer in Batavia. Abiel, a successful dentist, is a resident of Medina, where he practised his profession during many years. Marian J., who married H. C. Finch."
  Abiel died intestate, and his widow Anna applied for administration of his estate in the county of Orleans. His heirs-at-law were Augustus, Anna, Adna, George, Abiel, Mary, and Julies, all under age except Augusts (August 26, 1818). Both Anna and Morton A. Post were granted administration. On April 16, 1851, the estate was settled, with a special guardian having been appointed for those children still under age, George, Abiel, and Julia. The other children, Adna and Anna, were of age. Book and page not given for the copy of the probate records. Interestingly the probate county judge was a H. R. Curtis (Henry R. Curtis).
