Notes
a. Note:   In interviews with Dalton's widow Marian 12/81 and 3/82, she states:
Dalton was born July 29th 1888 in Surry county NC. His parents were RIchard Lee Chandler (of English descent) and Sarah Lynn Wall (of NC Dutch descent). There were 12 children then 8. Dalton was in the middle of the eight. His mother named him Dalton in honor of the doctor attending at birth, because it was the first time she had a doctor in attendance for this. When he was about 12 his family moved to Winston Salem NC. He attended Methodist Preacher's College and there he met Ada Cowert whom he married in 1908. The couple moved to her home in Savannah, GA They had 2 sons Charles and RIchard. Charles' son is Garth Chandler. Richard's wife is Bessie. They were in NC. Richard and Charles are dead now. Ada died not long after her 2nd son was born and Dalton married Edith May Lord in Savannah. They had 3 children: David Lee, Netta May, and Luther. Luther is deceased now. When Dalton and Edith moved to Los Angeles he lived near York and Glassel Blvd, and he worked with Wooster Construction Co. building the Caliente Hotel and Race Track
 ---------------------------
Martha Chandler, his daughter in law, stated that by the time she met Dalton (in the mid 1930's) he was working as a supervisor of carpenters in a wholesale warehouse for Southern Pacific Railroad. She says he was very pleasant and kind and she was very fond of him
 -----------------
The 1st census I found Dalton in is 1900, indexed as Dalt Cha??er. He is living with his parents in Siloam, Surry Co NC. I have not found him in the 1910 Census. His WWI draft card gives the birth place listed here and says he is a carpenter, living in Savannah GA and has a wife and three children. It says he is of medium height and build and has brown hair and eyes. He signed with an X mark.
In the 1920 census Dalton Is listed as Dawson Chandler and is still living in Savannah and working as a carpenter.. He now have 4 children, Luther had not been born yet, despite his later claim to being born in 1917.
In 1930 He and Edith are in San Diego with the 3 younger children David age 15, Netta age 11 and Luther, age 10. . He is still working as a carpenter.
