a. Note:   Martha's death certificate lists her occupation as retired school teacher and gives the names and birth states of her parents. At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter Carrie in Crockett, CA.
  Tape from her grand daughter Muriel Martha Dahl in 1981: Martha Ann Phillips was born on a farm in Missouri sometime before the Civil War. She could remember slaves and the day that Lincoln freed the slaves. She was a teacher in a one room school house and was VERY strict.
  Conversation with grand daughter Jue Dahl in 1982: Martha was the oldest child in her family. She had at least two sisters named Molly and Effie. Her father was born in England (according to the family Bible it was Martha's grandfather).
