a. Note:   When her parents went to try their luck in the goldfields in CO in the early 1880's , Blanche was left behind in the care of two elderly aunts (her mother's sisters) who never married and lived in Texas. Alma was never returned to her parents and did not get to know her siblings until all were adults living in the Los Angeles area.
  She married, had 2 children and worked as a school teacher. Eventually she divorced her husband. It was her sister's opinon that Alma's upbringing had not prepared her for the practicalities of marital compromise. She was also remembered by her sisters for her love of big purple hats. She worked as a school teacher. She lived to be nearly 100 years old and was very active until nearly the end.
