a. Note:   According to my grandmother Florence Castlio (who was his granddaughter), Othaniel went west for the California gold rush with two of his brothers and a brother in law. He came back with a small fortune in gold, which he used to puchase 600 acres of land and to settle down with his new bride, Cordelia. He smuggled horses to the Confederacy during the Civil War and got swamp fever for his efforts, which left him weakened for the rest of his life.
