Note: From a letter to me by my father, John Rush Hann (b. 1917) on 17 March 1983: Emma, the oldest child, married George Cowan. I never met him but am told that he was handsome, witty and very smart. He was a salesman for a sugar beet firm. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1900 United States Federal Census Name: George Cowan Home in 1900: Compton, Los Angeles, California Age: 31 Estimated birth year: Sept 1868 Birthplace: Kentucky Relationship to head-of-house: Head Spouse's name: Emma Race: White Occupation: Salesman - Grocer Household Members: Name Age George Cowan 31 KY,KY,TN Emma Cowan 30 IN,IN,IN Wilhelmina Cowan 7 CA,KY,IN Elmer Cowan 5 CA,KY,IN ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1910 United States Federal Census Name: George W Cowan Age in 1910: 41 Estimated birth year: abt 1869 Birthplace: Kentucky Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: Blank Mother's Birth Place: Tennessee Spouse's name: Grace A Home in 1910: Chino, San Bernardino, California Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age George W Cowan 41 Beet Farmer Grace A Cowan 30 Lawrence Cowan 5 Murrey Cowan 10/12 Alina Cowan 17 Elmer Cowan 16 Leopaul Border 28 Farm Hand Shortie Bascinta 29 Farm Hand ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In the 1920 census, Grace appears as a widow, with the two younger children at home in Compton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ What follow is an email I received on 4/14/07: "I believe, but have never been able to prove that the George W. Cowan in your data base, is the older brother of my grandfather, Daniel A. Cowan. Daniel's oldest daughter remembered her Uncle George sending them Christmas presents from California (Los Angeles). Daniel may as well have come from another planet, for all he knew or I could find out about him. But I did get a copy of the marriage license for George and his second wife, Grace Hann, younger sister of his first wife, Emma. Also got a copy of his death certificate. After a second request from the Coroner's Office, Grace supplied George's mother's maiden name: Gann. She did not provide a first name for either of his parents. There are many Gann's in Tennessee in the Civil War and of course, many Cowan in Kentucky -- on both sides. Grace's information indicates that George went to LA when he was about 15 years old. The story is that Daniel and his brother were orphaned when Daniel was pretty young, which would explain why he knew nothing but his older brother had some info, IE that his father was born in KY and mother in TN. It is probable that the relative who took them in also took them to California, though I can find no record of Daniel there. I hope this may be of some interest to you." elaine cowan ------------------------------------------------------------- The death certificate says George died of TB of the lung, tht he had been in Calif for 35 years, that he had been in compton for 6 years, that his mother's maiden name is Gann and she was born in TN. No infor given in the father. --------------------------------------------------------------------- U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006 about George W Cowan Name: George W Cowan Death Date: 3 Jan 1919 Interment Date: 3 Jan 1919 Cemetery: Los Angeles National Cemetery Cemetery Address: 950 South Sepulveda Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90049 Buried At: Section 37 Row G Site 10
