The original is now held by Raymond Kent Hann Bosely town Hamilton County Indiana October the second 1881 Dear children thrue the mercies of an all wise creator I take my pen in hand to try to (write) to you something of how we are getting along first we are all enjoying reasonable health at present for which we have abundant reason to be truly thankful to him who rules above we home when this comes to hand it may find you all well and doing well it has been a long time sinc we had a letter from you I rote a letter to you several months ago did you get it I hope you did though I am sorry to tell you we never got any answer I feel ashamed that I have been so neglectful and have written to you so seldom please forgive me for the past. I feel resolved that in the future I will try to wrights offtner though it is a hard job for me to wright as can plainly see when you try to read this please to try and wright us offtnener it always makes our harts glad to get a letter from you do not think that because you get so few letters from us that we have forgetten you No No but let us here from you often never while memery lasts can it forget that memerable day when we gave each other the parting had at George Laramores and that dear little Delly with her hear little arms klinging round my neck what shall I say or how can I tell the feelings of my heart on that occasion but we are tought in that good book that trials and troubles await us and that in this wourld we must have tribulations�.again it is said that if in this life only we have hope we are of all men most miserable hope that is seen is not hope but if we hope for that we see not then do we wait for it with patons I realize that fact that I am failing fast and ripening for the graive earthly things are fading away aloosing its charms with me but I trust I have a little hope that when the trials and troubles of earth are passed and gone that there are places of rest prepaired for poor unworthy me though I have passed thrue many sore trials and troubles I have abundant reason to be thankful that it is well with me as It my pathway has been strued with blessings far above that which I deserve my health has been good for the last three years so that I have been able to do as much hard labor as most of the young men. Johnny and I have raised 16 acres of corn this season and I have been halling saw logs a distance of 10 miles nearly every day for thre months making from $2.50 cts to $4 dollars a day but it is almost more than I am able to stand I have a good team and wagon we have a nice little 25 acres lot tolerable will fixed 10 miles west of Bunavista in Hamilton County one half mile from the pike we are some in debt on it two payments of $1.33 one payment due next march an one in one year from then I am trying to meet my payment and have a little home in our old age it is now worth $1200 it would be unnessassary to tell you of the troubles that I have passed thrue in the last five years I was brok up entirely I am trying to pay for our little home and to be contented with it I have had the best of luck since I commenst here I think I can pay out if I have no bad luck Mother is weaving carpet and raising chickens and turkeys she has a bout 40 turkey and chickens to tedious to mention. Emmy is married to a Mr. William Miller over 2 years age they live close to us. William is at Jaspers working a plastering assatipee[??] George is in Shelby County working at his trade Frank is at home most of the time Elly is at Bunker on a visit Johnny is going to school and I am halling sawlogs and mother is weaving carpet Lou & Alonzo were all well a fu days age John Milholland and wife are both dead and now I by asking you to answer this as sonn as this comes to hand.
