Notes
a. Note:   born about 1579, probably at St. Davids, Pembrokeshire [Wales] wher e his father was Rector. Nothing further than the fact that he was the s on of Rev. William Merrick is at this time known of John. It is assumed h ere that he was the father of the four brothers [William, James, John, a nd Thomas, and their sister Sarah] who came to New England from Bristol , England, in the ship "James," in the spring of 1636.
This is pure assumption, as no record of John's children has as yet bee n found; but the fact that in several families of the American Merricks t here is a tradition that the father of the immigrants was named John, t he similarity of the family (given) names; the fact that they sailed fr om Bristol, which is the nearest prominent sea-port to St. David's; the f act that one of the brothers, James, was a fish-packer, and another, Jo hn, a block-maker, occupations common among the sea-faring population o f St. David's, lend strong presumptive evidence to the assumption.
It has been suggested, and there seems to be good ground for the sugges tion, that the John Mirick, who had a grant of land at Hingham in 1637, a nd who died at Roxbury, June 25, 1650, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, was t he father of the four brothers of Charlestown [Suffolk County, Massachu setts]."
