Note: Gary was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He was a platoon leader and had raised his hand to wave his men forward and was subsequently shot in the hand. His mother, Lois, recalls Gary telling of being taken off the field and thrown into a helicopter- laying on top of his best friend who was already dead.
