Note: 7 came to MI with his brother Albert from New York state.. They traveled to Erie Pennsylvania, then by boat to Detroit MI. where they secured oxen and journed with determination back through swamps and forests to Wheatfiled twp. Ingham co . Here they homesteaded the land. James Russell Pollock 1995 still speaking, have the original land grant signed by James Buchanan, President of US. Early surveyors had characterized the territory as an"unpenetrable swamp forever unsuited as an habitation for man." " But they cleared the land, drained the swamps, and brought forth a rich abundance. I have more of this book but these were the highlights I felt. I also have new old pictures of the Polloks Like Nancy Decker and many others that I'd like to share if only Rootsweb would allow those to be downloaded as well. Original Documents of Orla B Pollok, Are held by Nancy A Pollok as well as Oral History ,Tombstone Photo. Ella Standish had this in her possession, sent to me by Marcia Standish; Newspaper article about Albert Pollok reads: Albert D Pollok dies at his home in Wheatfield Township. Was Highly Respected Justice of Peace 35 years, and Health Officer for Greater part of time. Albert D Pollok, one of Ingham county's most estimable citizens, died at his home in Wheatfield township yesterday morning, after a painful illness with cancer of the jaw. He had been troubled with the growth for about a year and a half, but it was not until about two weeks ago that he was taken seriously ill. Sunday a hemorrhage set in which nearly resulted fatally before a doctor could be secured from Williamston. His suffering during his last hours was intense. Albert D Pollok was born at Sodus Point, N.Y. in 1837, and came to Michigan with his parents in 1852. Two years later the family settled on the farm in Wheatfield, which has been his home ever since. In 1861 he married Miss Elizabeth Decker, and eleven children were born to them. One son died several years ago at the age of twelve, and the youngest daughter, Mrs. Zelma Kaywood, died at the home of her parents last fall. Of the other children, Ernest Pollok and Mrs. Ella Standish live in Grand Rapids, Mrs. Clara White lives near Lansing, Elmer Pollok lives in Munith, Mrs. Abby Cochran in Bunker Hill, Orla Pollok has been living with his parents, Romine Pollok and Mrs. Gett Lambert live in the same neighborhood, and John Pollok lives near Williamston. Mr. Pollok was an influential citizen in Wheatfield, and a leader in local politics. He had been justice of the peace about 35 years, and was health officer of the township for the greater part of that time, showing the extent to which he commanded the respect and confidence of those who knew him . He was past master of the Masonic lodge in Dansville, an active worker and teacher of the Bible class in the Pollok Sunday school , and a member of the M. E. church. Beside the widow and children he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ann Rossetter and Mrs. Minnie Turley of Homer, MI. The funeral will be held at the late residence at ten o'clock Sunday morning. Rev. Floyd Gorsline of Williamston officiating with internment in the Spaulding Cemetery. NOTE: Some township and place names are in more than one county. Pollok, R. D. Route No. 5, Mason, Mich. wrote a letter containg (2 cents postage) TO: Orla B. Pollok, Grand Rapids Michigan, General Delivery. Albert D wrote this letter to his son Orla B and wife Edith Atwood who were in Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI with their 2 children, Viva age 6 and Albert Steven age 3 months. "October 1 1908, Orla If you can find no work out there I wish you would come home and husk my corn as I shall be obliged to hire it husked and it will save you getting the money to pay me[.] Let me know at once as I want to come there [Grand Rapids] the last of the week to take treatment again[.] And if you come you ma will [sic] stay here[.] I wish you could come right away before I go and then I will know what arrangements to make[.] All is quite [?] well Albert" envelope addressed to "Orla B Pollok, Grandrapids Michigan, General Delivery" from "Albert D Pollok, R.D.Route No. 5, Mason, Mich." The address of the farm in sec 28 Wheatfield twp is sometimes Mason and sometimes Dansville. A letter addressed to Orla B Pollok at RR Williamston also arrived safely at the farm. ==================================== As told by Nancy Pollok OWNSHIP OF FARM: As his father Albert urged in the letter of October, 1908, Orla did return to the farm from Grand Rapids, probably immediately upon receipt of the letter. Albert S POLLOK the grandson said that he was born in Grand Rapids but only lived there a few months. July 12 to October or November of 1908 would be 3 or 4 months. After the death of Albert D POLLOK in 1909, the ownership of the family farm and house passed to his widow, Elizabeth. She lived there with her son Orla and his family ... that is, the young Orla and his family lived with her. The census entries for 1910 and 1920 are clear that Elizabeth owned the farm. Orla purchased a Case Steam Traction Engine with several attachments, such as a threshing machine, a lumber mill, and a clover huller. As we do almost 100 years later, Orla borrowed money for the first purchase, rolled the loan into bigger loans, and used the steam engine (not yet paid off) as collateral. In the 1920 census Orla gives his occupation as "THRESHER." not just a farmer! In 1922 when the steam engine drive belt broke and struck Orla, causing his death, his widow Edith was left with 2 kids and lots of debt. She took the two kids to Lansing and ran a boarding house for men. After the death of her son Orla Elizabeth sold the farm to her son Ernest POLLOK. A picture of Ernest and Elizabeth which I have of them standing in front of the house, taken about 1927 just before her death, would tend to support the oral history that she lived there from 1922 to 1927. ================ Nte of interest perhaps in this book of the Pollok family there are pictures and in one is this same house in that same side a picture of other Pollok families many years later than this one was taken still in the Pollok family.
