The Whitfield Lett of Jennings county, IN did have a daughter named Mary, and she is almost certainly "yours". Mary was said to be the daughter of Whitfield's second wife (Sarah J HUNT) by some early researchers--but that never did jibe with the 1860 census, where the family is listed under the name "Scott" in Jenings county, IN. A daughter "Maria" was shown as being 7 years old (born about 1853). Whitfield and Sarah did not marry until 17 March 1856.
As you know, Whitfield did have a previous marriage to Mary Jane Brown 25 December, 1837. Mary Jane was still alive at the time of the 1850 census.
Their children were:

Preston W Lett born 1847
Alonzo N Lett born 1850 (1850 census)
(Alonzo also shown as Asa Lett in 1860 census?)

In the 1880 census, Whitfield Lett is shown in household # 88 family 88 on page 417 of the Jennings county, IN census (age 63, a carpenter). With him are his wife, Sarah J ( age 48) and listed in the home but as household 89 are his son-in-law Leonidas age 20 and daughter Martha age 20.
Household 89 is a TIBBETS family and
Household 90 is a Laferber family:
James Laferber age 48 a physician
wife Rebecca age 49
Luella 21
John A age 19
Emily age 18
Mattie age 11
Hattie age 9
Josie age 8
Whitfield Lett was a brother to my second great grandfather, John H Lett (son of Isham Lett and Elizabeth Wells who married in Harrison co KY in 1811).
