Note: N800 Genforum post by Sherri Abromavage:
The Whitfield Lett of Jennings county, IN did have a daughter namedMary, and she is almost certainly "yours". Mary was said to be the daughter of Whitfield's second wife (Sarah J HUNT) by some early researchers--but that never did jibe with the 1860 census, where the family is listed under the name "Scott" in Jenings county, Indiana. A daughter "Maria" was shown as being 7 years old (born about 1853). Whitfield and Sarah did not marry until 17 March 1856.
As you know, Whitfield did have a previous marriage to Mary Jane Brown 25 December, 1837. Mary Jane was still alive at the time of the 1850 census.

Whitfield and Sarah are buried in Cave Dixon cemetery, Jennings co INin the northwest corne r by the riverbank, there is a low stone wallaround their graves Whitfield died about 12 Fe b 1890 (his obitappears a few days later) in Paris, Jennings co IN, funeral byMethodist church by Elder Powell of the Baptist church. Sarah died 18May 1894 (was born 12 Feb 1832) I have this family on 1840, 1850, 1880census. I have obit for death cert info for Whitfield, which gives hisfather as Isom Lett, mother a s Elizabeth Wells. Whitfield appears onthe toll book of voters for Jennings co IN August 1850 next to a mannamed Newton Lett (who I believe to be his brother).

The brick house now owned by Harman Dixon was built by John Cobb. Thebrick house owned by Wm Bogie was built by Dennis Willey. The framebuilding owned by the late Geo B. Dixon, Dr. Goodhue had built and wasall from seasoned material. The large cement house that Thomas Rowlandowns Dr. Russell had built. Joseph Ayers, Whitfield Lett, MiloHiggins, David Sampson were some of the workman.

Leonidas Zener Ayers, Mrs. Stewart's brother, had earlier told thewriter much that was confirmed by his sister. He added some mattersshe overlooked. Among other things he called attention to thewidespread scattering of mulberry trees though the district at onetime, but that a blight of some kind was now rapidly destroying them.
He told something of his grandfather's life and recalled that he oncemaintained a large still near Paris from which he made Whiskey in suchquantities that he hauled it from there to Madison where he builtflatboats and shipped the Whiskey to the market in New Orleans.
He also told of an amusing incident in the life of his grandfather, atthe time of Morgan's raid. It seems that his uncle, while riding ahandsome horse, stumbled into the hands of Morgan's men. One of themordered Mr. Zener to dismount and shifting saddles told Mr. Zener tobeat it with his foundered horse. On this worn out animal, Mr. Zenerarrived home. His father, in turn was furious with anger and mountinganother fine animal rode after Morgan's outfit to demand the return ofhis horse. A little later he, too, returned home on a broken downhorse. They had covered him with guns and made him also mount one oftheir nags while they rode off with his good horse.
The Zeners and the Ayers have a long military record, members of theirfamily having served in wars on the American Continent since theSeventeenth Century.
And the almost anonymous Mr. Foster, of the historical note thataroused the writer's curiousity, according to Mrs. Stewart, is the manElizabeth Zener married and the piece of silk cloth in his possession,part of her Wedding Gown.
