  Served in World War I in the Navy aboard the USS Eagle, a survey ship, in the Caribbean. He was discharged (1917-18) after a diving accident from diving too deep. He reenlisted in the Air Force in 1918, guarding the War Chest on monument circle, downtown Indianapolis. He wed Eva H. LeFeber 10 January 1918 in Indianapolis. First child, Edith Lorraine, was born the following spring. Son Ralph Lester Peterson was born 8 Feb 1922 and a stillborn daughter Dorothy was born 18 October 1929.

  Obit: "Services for Harold D. Peterson, 82, Indpls, will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday in Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, .... He died Sunday in a local nursing home. Mr. Peterson was born at Chicago and lived here [Indpls] for 75 years. A World War I Army veteran, he was a conductor and brakeman for the New York Central and Indianapolis Union (Belt) railroads more than 20 years, retiring 18 years ago [1962]. He was a member of E. 16th Street Christian Church, Marion Masonic Lodge[#35] and Scottish Rite. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Frank Nauta." He was also a member of the VFW. He is buried in Washington Park East Cemetery location: Sec. G, lot 354, Indianapolis, Indiana.
