Gray of the firm of Gray & Beebe, grocers; born in Bradford Co., Penn.,Dec. 14, 1834; lived in that county until he came to Marion in 1844;engaged in farming in this vicinity until 1854, then commencedclerking in Marion; was employed as a clerk until 1872, when hecommenced business for himself. He married Sarah M. Davis July 3,1859; she was born in IN, but came to Marion with her parents when shewas quite young, in 1845; have one child--Corie L., born April 22,1860. W.Gray & family are living next door to them. Possible brother ofJames. James occupation is listed as a clerk. The 1900 census showshim as 65 and an attorney-at-law. County: LINN CO. - IOWA Record Notes: LOT E 1/2 12 Cedar Rapids Gazette, Nov. 26, 1928 Text: Death Strikes Twice In Sutherland Home. Mrs. Gray, Age 88, Dies Mrs. J. M. Gray, age 88 died Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the home of herdaughter, Mrs. H. A. Sutherland, 680 Central Ave, from the infirmitiesof old age. Her death occurred shortly before the funeral of Mr. Sutherland whodied Friday afternoon. Mrs. Sutherland is confined in bed due to a long standing illness, andwas unable to attend the funeral of her husband. Mrs. Gray was born Sarah Mac-Donald Davis, Feb 27, 1840, at Anderson,Ind. She came to Iowa with her parents, Henry and Elizabeth BerryDavis, in 1844, in a covered wagon, drawn by a four horse team. Sincethen she had made her home in Iowa. She was married to James MonroeGray in 1860. He died March 22, 1920. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Congregational Church and of Grove CityRebekah lodge. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Sutherland, andone sister, Mrs. M. P. Sigworth, of Cedar Rapids, who is the onlysurviving member of a family of ten children. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3p.m. in the chapel of theYocom funeral home. The Rev. Harold E. Carlson, assisted by the Rev.William. C. Perdew will be in charge. Grove City Rebekah lodge willalso have a part in the service at the chapel. Burial will be in OakShade cemetery.
