Robert and his family emigrated to Australia on the ship "Shackhammon", arriving 24 October 1863. The family was listed on the purser's log as Robert & Ann, 33; Alexander, 11; Robert, 9; John, 7; and Squire, 5. Passage was 3 per person. The ages suggest that they embarked in 1861, which means that they could not have used the Suez Canal, despite its completion in 1859, since we know from our research into India that the completion of the Canal meant a reduction in travelling time from 2 years to 6 months. As well, Harriet must have died before the sailing since she would have bee 13 years old.
