In the 1920 census, the two children that Mary had from her previous marriage, Emerson and Ruth, were given the last name Zimmerman (probably by the census taker).
From the Ellis Island online database:
Samuel Kirtley, 41, Martha, 17, and Mary Jane, 15
 Ethnicity: English
 Residence: Liverpool
 Ship: Teutonic

The online records also show that they had booked passage on the ship Oceanic 3 December 1901and that their residence was Sunderland, however all three names were crossed out. Their destinations differed between the two entries. The 1901 record said Boston, while the 1902 record said Bridgeport. In 1901, Samuel had $30, while in 1902 he said he had $100. The port of arrival for both was New York.
