Notes of Dr. J. Edward martin, P.O. Box 48, Rumford, Maine 04279 (S1) Dr. Martin advises that his grandparents, Bernard McCafferty and Sarah Campbell were married in Monson, Maine. Sarah was a school teacher at the time they met. Bernard was a legend in the Rumford and Mexico Maine area. He left many examples of masonry that continue to stand today. One of the most conspicuous is the lovely stone Episcopal Church. He hauled the stones by wagon from the Swift River that empties into the Androscoggin River in Rumford. His nephew, Jim Scott, was his mason helper. As a young man living in Chatham/Newcastle, New Brunswick,, Canada, on Saturday nights he was known to take on a sailor or two that came off ships in port. Apparently Chatham was a rough seaport town.
