Notes
a. Note:   I believe that my paternal grandmother was the typical common woman of the last century. Grandma Ryan sounds as if she lived her life for her husband and children. She died 13 years before I was born. What little I know of her is through Daddy and Mom and of course Aunt Al. I also discovered a few historical tidbits from research. MaryJane was born on the lower West side of Manhattan in a building that today serves as a warehouse. She was the youngest of three children, born to Irish immigrants. She was the only child to marry and have children. She visited Ireland when she was a youngster with her mother Ellen At the age of nineteen she married Francis Ryan and had 11 children. Daddy and Aunt Al said that she was quiet and gentle in contrast to 'Papa' She had little education but 'papa' saw her in the old neighborhood and thought that she was 'the cutest little thing'.
I admire her faith and endurance-her life was obviously a difficult one-she was to bury 4 infant children and an adult son-uncle Frank- who died in WWI. No mother would envy that kind of pain and heartache.
MaryJane died at the age of 74 from complications of diabetes, just as had her mother.
