"John Clarke, Esq., of Dungarvan, county inspector the county and city of Waterford, has been appointed the Lord Lieutenant first-class inspector - an appointment creditable to his Excellency, and satisfactory to the public."
  Cork Examiner, 02 November 1849.
"Oct 31st. - His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant has been pleased to promote John Clarke, Esq., Inspector of the County and City of Waterford, on recommendation of Colonel Sir Duncan McGregor, from 2nd. to 1st class County Inspector. Such an appointment reflected the highest credit on the executive Government, as a more amiable, or a more excellent character cannot be than Mr. Clarke. His humanity and good feeling displayed towards the food rioters of this town in '45, were most conspicuous, and proved him to be of sound judgement, steady, cool, deliberate and unflinching from his post, when surrounded with danger. Such qualities on his part, have gained for him the gratitude, respect and admiration of the public generally, who feel proud of the honour conferred on him."
