a. Note:   Austin served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a pilot, flying mainly the C-47. He served with the 438thTroop Carrier Group, carrying paratroopers, and towing gliders on D-Day and similar operations until VE day. Austin kept a diary of his time in the service and authored an account of the history of the 438th Troop Carrier Group. Before and after the war, Austin was in education, following graduation from Central State Teachers College (later CMC and CMU) both as a teacher and as an administrator. He taught at Holland High School and served as Assistant Principal there, leaving in 1957. He also earned a Masters in Education from Harvard University. He then took a position at Central Michigan University as Director of Admissions which he held until retirement in 1975.

 25 January 1934 "High School Athletics: The basketball game last Tuesday, January 16th, at Riverdale was anything but a basketball game; it resembled a wrestling and boxing match combined. The conditions of the playing space was such that neither team to get a shot at the basket unless directly under it. The game was played up stairs over a grocery store, and the ceiling was so low that it was necessary to have the baskets lowered below regulation height. Despite lowering the baskets, there was then only about one and one-half feet of spece to shoot a basket, so it was even impossible to make a shot from the foul line. Riverdale 7, Coral 4...We have been complaining about our playing conditions at Coral, but have found out other schools are worse off."
 15 March 1934 "The Coral High School basketball squad were given a banquet in their honor Monday, March 12, at the Co-op Hall. There were forty-six present; the fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of the boys...the boys made up for a lot of food they had gone without during the basketball season. Felt letters were presented to the following: Sedric Annis, Hugh Rose, Carson Bonn and Austin Buchanan."

Austin Buchanan and Arnold Strobel led the hitting, Austin getting three hits and Arnold two; each made a two base hit, the only extra base hits made......School will be closed from Friday, Oct. 5 until Monday, Oct. 21, for potato vacation."

 19 December 1935 " High School Notes: The following received an all "A" record for the six weeks:...Austin Buchanan. Many of the Coral High School boys have been working hard to make a potato judging team, that will represent the high school in the potato judging contest at Greenville. Coral boys taking part in the teams are:...Austin Buchanan, John Newell, Bill Snow,.... The Animal Husbandry Class of Coral High School took a trip to judge Holsteins at Carl Johnson's farm Tuesday morning. Class consists of ...Austin Buchanan, John Newell.....  26 December 1935 "Coral Team Wins: The Coral High School basketball team won its third and fourth straight games....Austin Buchanan is developing into an excellent center....."
 8 January 1936 "In Two Overtimes Locals Win Thriller:....In the first overtime period Mecosta made a basket in the first minute of play, and with but two seconds to go Austin Buchanan sunk a basket to tie the score again 22 to 22, and make it necessary to play another overtime period....the game ended with the final score being 26 to 23 in favor of Coral. Austin Buchanan deserves praise for his excellent playing in the fourth quarther and in the two overtimes making the basket that tied the score in the first overtime period and assuring Coral victory in the second...Bonn and Buchanan led Coral scoring with 8 points..."
 16 January 1936 "The Coral boys lost their first game of the season to a fast accurate shooting Crystal five, last Friday....Austin Buchanan played best for Coral, while LaSalle starred for Crystal. The final score was 32 to 24 in favor of Crystal. Austin Buchanan, with several of his classmates from Coral High saw "The Little Rebel", at Greenville, Wednesday night."
 12 March 1936 "Sedric Annis and Austin Buchanan were in Garnt Thursday and Friday evening helping their high school basketball team at Coral win the district championship."

 30 April 1936 "The Senior Class Play, "Billie, Behave!" was well accepted by the publlic and all who attended commented on the excellent work done by the seniors. austin Buchanan did exceptionally excellent work in his part, while all the rest played their parts to perfection."
 "Coral Baseball Team Wins First Game...8-7.... Dale Olsen, Coral pitcher developed a streak of wildness in the seventh and issued three walks coupled with an error and a hit produced three runs for Six Lakes. Buchanan replaced Olsen on the mound in the eighth but he was no better, walking three men, so Olsen again went back to the pitching mound, getting the side out...."
 28 May 1936 "C.H.S. Graduates Class of Nineteen: The Commencement Exercises of Senior Class of the Coral High School were held at the school auditorium last night. A packed house greeted the class and enjoyed the following program:...Presidnet's Address and Salutatory- Austin Buchanan, Class Song-"C.H.S.  25 June 1936 "Coral F.F.A. Team Defeats Greeville: Probably one of the most hotly contested softball games that has been played in many a moon was played on Tues. at Greeville...Final score was Coral 4 and Greenville 1." [Austin was the pitcher for Coral in this game per a note he made on the paper.]
 13 August 1936 "Austin Buchanan of Coral, has been awarded a scholarship according to a statement made by President E.C. Warriner of Central State Teachers Colleg, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. This scholarship will pay the tuition for one year."
 21 January 1937 "Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Buchanan honoring Austin's eighteenth birthday were Mr. & Mrs. John Buchanan, Mr. & Mrs. John McIntire of Charlotte, Dick Ashley of Coral and Claude Lake of Howard City."
 18 February 1937 "Austin Buchanan, Coral Freshman, is listed on the honor roll at Central State Teachers college for the fall term, 1936. Including extension students, a total of two hundred twenty-eight persons received a "B" average or over."
 7 October 1937 "Austin Buchanan, sophomore at Central State Teachers College and a Coral boy, has been chosen by Dr. L.E. Hutto, the new head of the physical education department at the college, to be host to the visiting football squad form Northern State College, Marquette, next Saturday at the Annual College Homecoming. He will have charge of twenty-five or thirty players.."

 12 May 1948 "Also on Friday, Coach Austin Buchanan will test his Holland High track squad with competition from the Southwest conference and the Grand Rapids City league in a big track meet at Houseman field in Grand Rapids. It will be the first meeting between the two conferences which will include 11 teams."
 14 October 1948 "Holland Thinclads Run Cross-Country: The first cross-country team in the history of Holland high school dropped its initial match to Benton Harbor Wednesday afternoon 19-40. The teams raced around the two-mile course at Benton Harbor. .....Coach Austin Buchanan took a squad of 11 men to the meet. He said he was very well satisfied with the first showing of his runners. "It is a new sport at Holland high and I'm sure the team will improve." Buchanan said."

 13 August 1974 "Reminiscing Featured at HHS '54 Reunion...Austin J. Buchanan, Dirctor of Admissions at Central Michigan University was the guest speaker. Mr. Buchanan was one of the class sponsers and assistant principal at Holland High School in 1954."
