Note: One researcher has noted her maiden name as Bean. http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/nichols/3532/ Matilda last appears in the 1880 Marion County AL census with her husband Joshua Nichols, daughter Susan C., and four grandchildren. In 1900 Joshua is found with Susan in Prentiss County MS. The records of the Forked Oak Cemetery in Booneville, Prentiss County, MS contain an entry, but no photos of tombstones, for Joshua and Matilda Nichols, who are listed as twins born and died on 20 Aug 1811. This is incorrect since the Nichols families did not move from Marion County AL to MS until sometime between 1888 (when grandson Farrell was arrested for moonshining) and 1900 when they appear in a census there, so it is likely that the entry actually reflects husband and wife Joshua and Matilda Nichols, parents of Susan Caroline Nichols. Although earlier censuses indicate Joshua was born about 1821, the 1900 census lists his birth in Mar 1809, so the birth data in 1900 seems incorrect. Would 20 Aug 1811 then be the birthdate of Matilda? I don't think so since she is shown in most censuses as being the same age as Joshua, except for one in which she is one year younger. The early dates seem unreliable based on census data from 1850 forward and will not used in establishing the birth dates of Joshua and Matilda.
