Note: e of 18. He was born in the first house across the road and east of Grace Chapel. He was 6 years old when his mother, Ollie, died of tuberculosis. Big sister, Helen, had been trained by Ollie to care for the family and especially Lloyd. It was hard on Helen when baby Lloyd was given to the Gurtners, but probably it was the best for Lloyd. Mom (Glady's) notes: James attended Greenville College 2 years (1935-1936 and 1936-1937). He taught school for 2 years(1937-1938 and 1939-1940). He attended Greenville College a 3rd year (1940 to 1941). He entered the service in 1941 and was discharged in November, 1945. He was overseas (Phillippines) for 3 years 6 months. Their first date was in tne Fall of 1938 (possibly he took her home after a church service at Grace Chapel) and they went together for 8 years. After being married by Clarence Nobbe in St James, Illinois on January 4, 1946, they moved to Greenville, Illinois. They moved an apartment above the music hall and both planned to attend college. Gladys became pregnant with Nina and James got an offer at the First National Bank of Vandalia. He left college and started to work there in February 1946. He worked there 27 years. Their first apartment home was 413 N. 5th Street. The first home they owned was at 516 Fillmore Street, across from Staff's Music Studio. The second home they bought on Otober 28, 1957 was located at 620 N. Burtschi Street. He fell to the floor of the First National Bank about 1:00 PM on February 17, 1993. A heart attack caused his death. Nina was 7 months pregnant with James and was working at the Passaic Library in Passaic, New Jersey when Dwight came and told her of her father's death.
