Memories from Janice Jacobson Ayres October 1, 1998
Janice is the daughter of Bernice Weiss, granddaughter of Carolina.
All I remember of Carolina was her sitting in a rocking chair and not saying or doing anything. I was only 8 years old when she died so I don't have lots of things I remember about her. I am sure, though that one of the reasons she never said anything was because she didn't speak English.
The 1900 Census lists Carolina as not being able to read, write or speak English. It also indicates that she had 8 children of which only 5 were living.
She lived with her daughter Louise Poltrock after the deaths of her sons Wilhelm Christian in 1912 and George in 1914. She is listed with them on the 1920 Census. Louise died in 1934.
Carolina "Lena" then resided with Edward and & Caroline Weiss at Rt Green Bay Road for four years before her death at their home. She was born in Hanover, Germany and was a member of the St. James German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Chicago. She is survived according to her Obituary by her daughter Caroline Weiss, six grand children and nine great grand children. She is interred in Concordia Cemetery in Chicago - Lot 330 - 9C
  Previous residences are listed below:
 In 1905 - 656 N. Paulina St.
 In 1906 - 36 Freemont St
 In 1912 - 1815 Freemont St.
 In 1914 - 1331 N. Paulina St.
There are different spellings of Carolina and Caroline, Lina and Lena
and of Last Name Meier and Meyer.
I believe it was Carolina Meier "Lina" and
Caroline Oberheide "Lena" from looking and different documents. KLW
On June 25, 1999, I (Karen) went to the National Archives in Chicago and looked at the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses. I finally found the Oberheide family.
George and Carolina, George, Christina (Justina, error in name) and Willie are listed on the 1900 Census. The 1910 census lists Carolina as the head of household and her occupation a Laundress for private families.
