NOTES ABOUT JEWEL By Jimmie Stroud, son of X.L. Stroud and Isla Bartley Stroud, grandson of Jewel Cearley Stroud.
I remember Jewel Stroud as a small pretty woman with long dark shiny Alburn hair, that she wore up in a bun most of the time. Sometimes she would let me and my sister brush her hair at night. I did not do this many times for I was at an age where all things were judged either as manly or sissy. I, being a foolish young boy, decided that brushing my grandmothers hair was not something that a real cowboy like Old Gene or Roy would do. So I would set in her bed room while my sister (Jeanette) would do the brushing. Mom's hair reached below her waist and I all ways thought it was the most beautiful hair I had ever seen. Mom would ask if her little man would comb her hair and then she and my sister would giggle at my discomfort. I liked these sessions because she always talked about the days events and told stories about the family as if we were as grown up as she was. I always felt grown up around Mom.
She was very proud of her mother , Dora, and several different times told me that she and therefore I were related to General Bedford Forrest through her mother's father who was a nephew of the General. I have never checked this story out except that I know that the General did have some bothers. A question to be looked into at a later date. August 28, 1994.
I also remember Mom cooking. Her chocolate meringue pie and cherry cobbler will always be remembered by me. In looking back it seems that cherry cobblers or chocolate pies was always in the oven when ever I went to Mom's house. She knew what I liked!

 **********NOTE TWO**************
 November 11, 1997.
Received letter from Geraldine Cearley Butler asking for information on my children. January 21, 1999. Geraldine is a daughter of Mom's brother Oran Cearley. Geraldine said that Mom said that Dora Carpenter Cearley, was a niece of General Bedford Forest. Geraldine said her research shows that Dora was older than the General's brothers, so that rules the niece part out but she might be some kind of cousin. Dora Cearley was Mom's mother and Geraldine's grandmother. Research is on going. Any information is welcome!
