Notes
a. Note:   Peterson Patriot March 11, 1897 Peterson, Clay County, Iowa
Last Friday night occurred the death of Gottlob Kurtz, living about eight miles southwest of town. All winter Mr. Kurtz has been confined to the house more or less troubled with asthma, but otherwise a healthy man. On Friday night he was taken with a spell of choking and in a short time surrendered to the reapers of death. Thus an honored sentinel was called from earth to join that mighty army beyond. Mr. Kurtz was an elderly man and not only honored by American citizens for being one of the boys who wore the blue, but claimed similar honors from his mother country Germany. The remains were laid to rest in the Evangelical cemetery last Sunday with Rev. Meinzer officiating.
The loss of such men from this earth is not only a source of sorrow to the bereaved relatives, who have the heart-felt sympathy of all, but his loss is mourned by that noble institution, the G. A. R. and every patriot citizen.
Gottlieb Kurtz enlisted at Des Moines on January 4, 1864, joining as a recruit from Davenport, Iowa, and served as a Private Artificer in the First Independent Battery, Iowa Light Artillery. He was in the battle before Atlanta on July 22, 1864. He was mustered out about March or April of 1865 going on furlough March 14, 1865.
