Note: hat was a lie. He was an illegal immigrant to the United States.. A certified copy of his birth certificate, received from Vital Statistics of Manitoba proved that he was born at Misericordia Hospital, Municipality of Selkirk, Province of Manitoba, Canada on 27 March 1909. It should be noted that Selkirk is part of the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The birth was recorded by the City Clerk's office, City of Winnipeg, on 14 Apr 1909. He entered school on 26 January 1915 at the King Edward School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. On 1 Mar 1920, he entered the Medicine Hat, Alberta public schools. He entered that school at grade six level. L.N. Stewart dropped out of school 24 January 1924, and went to work for a bank in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. This is documented in records from the Medicine Hat , School District Number 76. These records show that he was withdrawn from the Medicine Hat schools twice, before leaving for good. He never completed the 10th grade in school. At various times over the years, he claimed to have been a medical student at McGill University. That University has no record of his attendance or of any application to attend. He also claimed to have attended Princeton University, but he never did. At some point by 1927, he came to the U.S., where he obtained employment with the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad in Feb. 1927. He worked for them in Hoboken, NJ until Aug., 1927, when he went to work for the Delaware, Lakawana & Western Railroad Co in Morris and Essex Counties, NJ. He worked for them until Dec, 1936. However, their payroll records show that he was a furloughed employee as of December, 1931. NOTE: The Delaware, Lakawanna and Western RR said that he listed his date and place of birth on their records as March 27, 1904 in Winnipeg, Canada. He was listed as a Cabin Steward and Ordinary Seaman aboard the steamships SS Admiral Laws and the SS Admiral Senn, which sailed between Ocean Falls, British Columbia or Vancouver, BS, , Canada and the Seattle, Washington area. He made a series of 9 round-trip voyages in 1933-1934. The company was badly hit by the depression of the 1930's, and was folded into the American President Lines, and those ships were pulled out of service. He is listed on the official Passenger and Crew lists kept by the US Government, and interestingly, he says that he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His voyages were, in order: 21 September 1933, arrived in Port Angeles, WA from Vancouver, BC aboard the Admiral Laws. Listed as being employed for 3 years. 15 Oct 1933, arrived in Seattle from Ocean Falls, BC, aboard the Admiral Laws. Listed as being employed 7 years. 13 Nov 1933, arrived in Seattle from Ocean Falls, BC, aboard the Admiral Senn. 30 Nov 1933, arrived in Port Angeles, WA from Vancouver, B.C. aboard the Admiral Senn. Listed as being born in Minneapolis, MN and being employed 3 years. 14 Jan 1934, arrived in Anacortes, WA from Ocean Falls, B.C. aboard the Admiral Senn 2 Feb 1934, arrived in Port Angeles, WA from Vancouver, B.C., aboard the Admiral Senn. 15 Mar 1934, arrived in Port Angeles, WA from Vancouver, B.C. aboard the Admiral Senn 9 Apr 1934, arrived in Bellingham, WA from Ocean Falls, B.C. aboard the Admiral Senn 27 Apr 1934, arrived in Port Angeles, WA from Vancouver, B.C. aboard the Admiral Senn. His is listed as being a US citizen, and as having been employed with this company as a seaman for 10 years. It appears that he "jumped ship" after this last voyage. According to Flora "Ruth" Stewart (his 1st wife), he was working as a busboy when she first met him in Seattle, WA in 1935. In Aug 1937, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked for them until his retirement in the early 1970's. He was a Brakeman, and then a Freight Conductor with that railroad. He married Flora Belle Wright in Seattle, WA in Jan 1936. They were divorced in October, 1945. He had almost no contact with his children from this marriage, after the divorce. He was ordered by the court to pay $50.00 per month for each of his children in child support ($150.00 per month). These payments were to be made at the rate of $75.00 every pay period. He never paid any child support at all. He claimed to have paid his ex-wife a large sum of money, in lieu of child support payments. In fact, this was payment for her share of the sale of the family home. In 1958, he came to San Diego, CA, where his three children from his first marriage were living. He knew that his daughter and older son were supporting their younger brother, but he did not even offer to take any of them out for a meal. At various times, his daughter and his youngest son visited him. He always made it very clear that they were not welcome, and that he had no interest in them. He did go out of his way to welcome his eldest son however. He remarried in 1949 to Mattie Holland. They had lived together for several years, had one son out of wedlock and she was pregnant with her daughter when they finally married. They had three children together, plus he adopted Ms Hollands son John from her first marriage. Those children all say that he was the loving and caring parent, the one that attended school functions, etc. He was a very high degree Mason. He was a member of the Masonic Order for his entire adult life. Following his retirement from the Union Pacific, he worked as a security guard.
