Note: ar 1943. Her family is listed in the various censuses of West Virginia, and of Virginia before the Civil War. They were predominately farmers. Mattie went through Grammar School, but never attended High School, according to her Army Enlistment Record.
She was only a WAC for a few months, somehow she got discharged. She worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher, from Sept 1. 1943 till July 1945. It was during that employment that she met L.N. Stewart.
