Note: IN2614
Note: NOT named in will of Mary Oliver, nee Jennings on 21 Mar 1825 in Nottoway Co, VA so either he died before then or he was not their son. from manuscript by Dorothy Haizlip Ward in 1990 "The Oliver Family" p. 10 "Thomas Oliver b. 1785" she suggests he is the son of Richard Oliver and Mary Jennings Oliver, Thomas A. & Moore, Betty October 14, 1808 Halifax http://genealogytrails.com/vir/halifax/marriages3.html#O Transcribed for Genealogy Trails by Peggy Luce from "Early American Marriages: Virginia to 1850" A posting by Teresa Speer in 2008 states Thomas had sons Harrison Moore Oliver, Thomas and William Ruben & 2 daughters with wife Elizabeth Moore. She states these records came from a Mrs. Martha Oliver but were not rechecked, but others say this also. Furthermore she states he died in 1825 which would fit with him not being mentioned in his mother's will. in 1810 there are 2 Thomas Oliver in Charlotte Co, VA which is adjacent to Halifax Co. Is the second one the son of the first, or just a younger one? 1810 Virginia > Charlotte > Not Stated > 36 Thomas Oliver - - 2 - 1// 2 - 1 - 1 // - 38 (Thomas and his wife over 45 with 2 sons 16-25, 2 daughters under 10 and one 16-25, and 38 slaves) Rass Osburne Thomas Oliver Jr. - - - 1 - // - - 1 - - // - 5 Linda Oliver obtained Estate Papers from Will Book II in Halifax County, VA that suggests that Thomas A. Oliver left behind 5 orphan children by about 1817. Elijah A. Newbill was the guardian of these 5 children: Harrison Oliver, Mary Oliver, Nancy Oliver, Thomas A. Oliver, Rubin Oliver. "Rubin Oliver to E A Newbill as guardian Dr. To board clothing and tuition so long as I have had him which has been 15 years 525.00 At a Court held for Halifax County the 22nd day of Oct 1832 The within written account current of the orphans of Thomas A Oliver decd....." 1820 Virginia > Halifax > Meadsville > 20 Elijah A Newbill - - - - 1- // 1 - 1 - - // + slaves 1830 Virginia > Halifax > Not Stated > 107 Elijah A Newbell - - - - 1 - 1 - - - - - - // - - - 1 1 - 1 - - 1 - - - // found by Linda Oliver in Feb. 2012: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnlincol/geneal/oliver.htm#VA My (Sheila Schmutz) interpretation of this posting by Dr. Ward Oliver is that he reviewed LDS microfilms of some will books from Halifax Co, VA and found "In book 32, p 546, Oct 1816, Nathaniel Barksdale and William Oliver made oath to administrate the estate of Thos A. Oliver, dec'd, Thomas Moon and John J. Oliver their securities. This was very near the end of book 32. " [I wonder if that could be Thomas Moore, a possible relative of Elizabeth Moore who is/was the mother of these children?] "In book 35, p 279, August 1819 there is a suit: Harrison Oliver, Thomas Oliver, and Reuben Oliver by their guardian William Oliver vs Mary Oliver and Nancy Oliver infants by their guardian Francis Moon". Note that if William Oliver was already appointed in relation to guardianship of Thomas A. Oliver's orphans in 1816, he must have been born before 1795. If the 1820 census below pertains to him, then he was at least 26 in 1820, so born before 1794. It is possible that the 3 boys under 10 and the orphans of Thomas A. Oliver: Harrison Oliver, Thomas A. Oliver Jr., Rubin Oliver. The girl under 10 is ???? The woman over 45 is likely his mother or mother-in-law. 1820 United States Federal Census > Virginia > Halifax > Marseilles William Oliver 3 - - - 1 - // 1 - - 1 1 // 7 in Ag + slaves [in the same district is a Richard Oliver Jr] _________ Note: Charles Waite has a Public Family Tree with another son, Thomas Andrew Oliver 1813-1879.
