Notes
a. Note:   Gwen Schneider thought that Bertha and her sister immigrated first, then they worked for their brother-in-law to pay their passage.
Berthe (later Bertha) left Oslo, Norway, in June 10, 1881 with her sister Anna. They left on the steamship Rollo bound for Hull, England. There they probably caught another ship bound for Quebec (see note below). A search of the Quebec passenger lists found nothing, however. On the Oslo "dampskip" register, Berthe was listed as residing in Valders, Norway, and the destination of Austin, Minnesota, was listed. Fare was prepaid.
(LDS Library film No. 1353088. Berthe and Ann are numbers 73 and 74 on the page.)
Note: See Halvor Lee's note for information on routes to the U.S. The S.S. Rollo was built by C&W Earle of Hull, England, in 1870, for the Wilson Line. She was a 1,437 gross ton ship, length 260.4 ft. x beam 32.3 ft., one funnel, two masts, iron construction, single screw and a speed of 11.5 knots. She accommodated 50 first class, 28 second, and 498 steerage passengers. She was scrapped in 1909.
