Title: NYC Mucnicpal Archives, 31 Chamber St Room 103 Following the Federal Census of 1890, officials of New York City felt the federal enumerators failed to give a true account of city residents. As a result, between September 19th and October 14th of that year, an enumeration of the twenty-four assembly districts of New York County was taken by policemen of the city. This census produced 1008 books and 13% more residents than the federal enumeration. Of those 1008 books, only 894 are still available. This updated version of an earlier posted database is an index to nine additional books for a total of thirteen books (58-61, 953-959), and adds the names of over 5000 persons. Information provided includes the resident's name, sex, and age. The book and page number from the original is also given. Abbreviations in the age column are m for months, w for weeks, and d for days. |

These are 2 different documents about the same event and give you two shots at finding information. Marriage license affidavits--one of the three parts of a City Clerk's marriage license-- were typically filled out by the bride and groom themselves if they were literate and have a much greater chance of being accurate than marriage certificates filled out by the person marrying the couple. Where the official performing the marriage, for instance, may have gotten the bride's mother's name wrong, it's a pretty good shot that the bride didn't! Plus, marriage licenses have more information than certificates, such as place of birth of the parents and bride's occupation. In addition, licenses sometimes show the place of the marriage, so you don't have to go through city directories and other sources looking for the affiliation of the person performing the ceremony With the date and locality of the marriage, the NYC Municipal Archives' staff will search for the license for you. Be specific in your letter that you want a search for a City Clerk's license, not a Dept. of Health marriage certificate, or they'll search for the latter. |
