Note: Matthew Fountain went to Whitman Co. Washington before 1880 and had a wheat ranch, he also owned property in Idaho. He served as a postmaster in Lone Pine WA for a short time in 1879. After the death of his second wife Tabitha in 1897 he sold all his property, left his two youngest children with their grandparents and returned to the place of his birth, Boone Co., MO. a place he had left at about five years of age. He married a third time and he and his wife moved to Chico, Butte, Co., California and started and orchard. He died suddenly in 1905 and his wife returned to MO.
