Note: Joseph Sobiecki born 25 March 1894 in Lasrym, Plock, Russia to parents Andrej Sobiecki and Agnes Ciewska. Joe immigrated to the United States in 1913. Philadelphia passenger lists:1800-1945 dated May 30, 1913, ship, "Chemnitz", leaving the Port of Bremen, Germany. Passenger: # 25 Sobiecki, Jozef age 20, a farm laborer, Citizen of Russia, of Polish People, Town of Lasrym. Not able to read or write any language. Closest relative living at Lasrym is his mother, Agnes Sobiecki. (We have to assume that his father was dead by this time) this ship arrived in the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. After arriving in Philadelphia, he traveled to the City of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin. There were other Sobiecki's living in this place. The following is a listing of the 1920 Milwaukee Census, shows that Joseph was still single and making a wage as a buffer in the local tannery. 1920 Federal Wisconsin Census Milwaukee, Milwaukee Ward 8 Dist. 106 Seventh Ave. Joseph Rosechecki age 33, of Poland. Immigration 1904, Naturalized 1918 of Poland Plaida wife age 32, of Poland, Immigration 1888, Naturalized 1918 Wanda daughter, age 12 of Wisconsin Gertrude daughter, age 10 of Wisconsin Grazewicz, Henrietta sister-in-law 30 of Wisconsin married Palmask, Sophie Mother-in-law 53 widow Immigration 1888 from Poland Rosechecki, Walter brother 36, Immigration 1913 Alien of Poland Joseph Sobiecki age 25 of Poland, boarding in the home of Joseph Rosechecki. Year of immigration is listed as 1912. Working as a buffer in local tannery Joseph Sobiecki, the son of Andrej Sobiecki and Agnes Ciewska married Anna Roszak, the daughter of Vincent and Stefania Roszak in 1922, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (you have to assume that the name Rosechecki and Roszak are familiar and related names) They may have married in either of St. Adalbert's or St. Hedwig's Catholic Parish which were located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A letter to the Milwaukee Archdiocese would confirm the date. 1930 Federal Wisconsin Census Milwaukee, Milwaukee Ward 14 Ninth Ave. Sobiecki, Joseph renting for $25.00 age 36, married at age 28, birth in Poland, parents of Poland, Immigration 1911--reports that he is still an alien. Doing bench work in a steel mill--might be Illinois Steel in Bay View--all of his relatives worked there. Anna reports that she immigrated in 1915 and is yet to be a Naturalized Citizen of the United States. Even if she became a Naturalized Citizen before her marriage to Joseph, she would have lost that honor when she married Joseph who was still considered an Alien. The laws of that day insisted that all married women take on the same citizenship statis that their husbands held, even if the woman was born in the United States. If a woman was born in the United States and married a man who was not a Naturalized Citizen and he was deported--she could be deported as well! Anna wife, married at age 17, birth in Poland, parents of Poland Immigration 1915-reports she is still an alien.
