a. Note:   as baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. He graduated from Roland High School in 1936. He attended Luther College in Decorah for two years as a member of the class of 1943.
  Herb was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and served with the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion in the European Theatre during World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a first lieutenant in 1947.
  Herb was united in marriage to Norene Kaasa at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland on April 24, 1944. Following his discharge from the Army, he completed his college education at the University of Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. degree in 1949.
  Herb and Norene moved to Ames, then to Mason City, where he worked for the federal government. In 1956, they moved to Iowa City where Herb did graduate work in history and economics. Two years later, Herb joined the faculty of Luther College in Decorah, where he taught economics and worked in the administration for nine years.
  In 1967, they returned to Mason City, where Herb completed his government career, retiring in 1978. Herb was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, loved reading and history, and collected a large and varied library during the course of his life.
  Herb is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norene Rod, of Mason City; four children, David Rod and his wife, Bette, of Coralville; Carolyn of Decorah; Janice, of St. Cloud, Minn., and Martha of Fort Atkinson, Wis.; three grandchildren, Charles, Joel and Emily Rod; one brother, Donald, of Ames, and numerous nieces and nephews.
  Herb was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary; sister, Dorothy; three brothers, Ernest, Ingvald and Paul, and three nephews, James, Michael and William.
