a. Note:   mbia Co., NY was the son of Richard and Mary (Pearsall) Valentine. However, upon closer examination of all the relative records it cannot be the case.
Letters of Adminstration [Columbia Co., NY Surrogate Rcds, Liber B, p. 30] filed 4 October 1792 for Joseph Valentine, of Columbia Co., NY, miller, appointed Richard DeCantillon of Dutchess County administrator. These papers state: “Administrator of all the singular the goods, chattels and credits which were of the said Joseph Valentine deceased during the infancey (sic) of the 6 children of the said Joseph Valentine.” This document further states that Richard DeCantillion, of Dutchess County, Merchant, was informed (of Joseph’s death) by the step mother of the said Joseph Valentine. No doubt he is the Joseph Valentine who with wife Catherine in 1784 was of the Charlotte precient in Dutchess County and mortages a property with a house and mill buildings in “New Conkerd in Albany county” with a Richard Valentine of Hempstead, LI. The baptisum of two of his daughters with Cathy (Hansinger) have been found: Martha in 1882 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co, and Maria, at the Ghent Dutch Reform Church, Albany (now Columbia) County on 4 April 1788. All of this is consistance with the 1790 census which finds Joseph at Canaan, with three boys under the age of 16 years and four females in the household.
This Joseph who died 1792 MAY have descended from Jonathan Valentine (c1692-1768/9), if so, probably through his son James, though only circumstantial evidence can be found. Jonathan's son Richard (1735-1812) was the only Richard listed as head of household at Hempstead in 1790. He seems the most likely candidate to have been the mortgagor of the mill property in Columbia County (1784 & 1792). Jonathan’s eldest son, James (1727-1807), had settled at Poughkeepsie about or soon after 1750; he married before 1750 (1) Martha Mott; married before 1774 (2) Dorothia -?-. James mentioned his wife "Dorothy" in his will of 1806. Besides Dorothy, unfortunately James' will only mentions his son Richard, and brothers Richard and Philip, though it is known that he had at least 4 other children (4 unnamed daughters mentioned in his mother's will of 1781). One of these daughters was Sarah (1750-1836) who married Matthew Conklin. From this it is obvious that for whatever reason James did not mention all of his children in his will. The fact that he had a second wife, would fit with the notice to Richard DeCantillion by Joseph's step mother. There is also evidence that a family relationship existed between Richard DeCantillion's wife Mary Stoutenburg, (d/o Tobias Stroutenburg and Catherine Van Vleeck) and the Motts: when Ebenezer Mott and Mary Van Vleck had Jacobus, bp 6 Jun 1784, Reformed Church at Rhinebeck, the sponsors were John Mott and Ann Stroutenburg, nee Van Vleck.
According to a family tradition on the day Joseph died a son was born to him, the date given for that birth is 16 August 1792, the son was named Joseph after his father. This Joseph born 1792 may be the one who married Anna Wederwax.
Note:   For some years I thought that the Joseph Valentine who died intestate in 1792 at Canaan, Colu
