Note: John Manly Overstreet was a salesman for Nelson Hardware Co. for 45 years. His family attended the First Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. and are buried in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, VA Personal Notes; I lived next door to Johnny when I was growing up in the 1930s & 40s in Roanoke , Va. Vaughnie had a Model A Ford coupe, on which I learned to drive. Johnny usually had a new Chevrolet supplied by Nelson Hardware. One of his favorite pastimes was going to watch the Roanoke baseball team play and I often went with him. His sisters, Sadie & Lois lived on the family farm in Moneta, and he often went there on weekends, sometimes he took me. There was a big church with a cemetery located beside it (some of the Overstreets are buried there). To reach the farm you turned down the dirt road beside the cemetery, across the N& W Ry. tracks and on for about a mile or so. Today it is a bridge, but in those days it seemed like a grade crossing. The farm house was a large frame house on the right with a barn and other buildings behind it. The water pump was on the east side about 40 ft. from the kitchen. The kitchen was extreamly large, and the sisters had closed off the rest of the house and lived in the kitchen, even had their beds there. Sadie did the farm chores and was a tall thin woman. Lois did the cooking and was a little plump and slow. In the chicken coop they had a 1920 Model T Ford, with 1932 tags. The car was completely filled with chicken droppings. Sadie later commited suicide, and Lois had to move into town. The house later burned down. Today the road is paved and there is no sign the farm ever existed. When I learned to drive in 1949, the sisters gave me the Ford, my first car. In payment I had to take them one day to Bedford VA for a shopping trip. Cleaning the car was a real chore, but my dad and I finally towed it back to Roanoke and eventually got it running. It was one of the early Fords that had an electric starter and the shifting of gears was done by pedels on the floor. Larry Snyder 1997 The following is from the 1870 Census of Bedford County Va.
