Note: Bess Alethia Gready: Aunt Maud was the smallest Adair sister, standing 5 feet tall in her prime and wore a size 12 children's shoe on her very small feet. In spite of her short statue, she was a very energetic person and 'comfortable' to be with. Albert Peter was of Irish lineage and had both the Irish sense of humor and Irish temper, and more bark than bite, and always hospitable. Uncle 'Allie" had one child, a son, James Joseph Duggan. It is believed he died in 1949 of heart trouble. He married Olga Wolfe April 26, 1936. They had two sons, James, Jr., and Timothy. Heart disease 'ran' in the Adair family and it took all the siblings, even the next generation. Uncle Allie was a machinist. This family began in Charleston and moved to Washington, D.C. where salaries were much higher. During my childhood and until I was 16 years old, my mother and Ethel my sister, and I would spend two weeks of every summer with Aunt Maud and 2 weeks with Aunt Ethel__and sometimes a week with Aunt Nettie. Oh, those wonderful rides on the train and the berth and the dining car! In the summer of 1931, Aunt Maud and Uncle Allie decided to drive down to Charleston. On the way they became involved in a serious automobile accident__serious for Aunt Maud, as she never fully recovered from knee injuries. In 1939, another summer, they again drove down and this time made it to Charleston. They brought with them their older grandson, baby James, and their dog Muggsy, a pit bull. I was 20 and 'fresh' from college graduation. I had no empathy with babies, and disliked Muggsy. In the nick of time the Reensjernas (Mr. & Mrs. Tycho) invited me to go with them and Helen, their daughter, to New York for a week, then to Highlands, N.C.. Helen was my best friend and we had great fun. Aunt Maud died March 3, 1946. The funeral was at the Roman Catholic Catheral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston. The burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Uncle Allie died March 22, 1969 in Washington, D.C. His body was sent here for burial in above cemetery. The body was accompanied by the two grandsons and their priest. Ethel, my sister, had them to refreshments at her home. I furnished the cake. OBITUARY (News & Courier) Mrs. Maud M. Duggan, wife of Albert P. Duggan and a native of Charleston, died Sunday in Washington, D.C. Funeral service will take place in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist tomorrow morning. Mrs. Duggan was born here May 6, 1891, daughter of Mr. and Lewis Adair. Surviving are the widower, a son, James J. Duggan of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Mrs. J.R. Gready, Jr., and Mrs. Arthur W. Wynne of Charleston, Mrs. W.R. Beatty of Mobile, Alabama, and Mrs. A.L. Moisson of Philadelphia, and two grandchildren.
