Notes
a. Note:   Lydia Pearce Brown grew up in Michigan and after receiving a teacher's certificate she taught third grade in Newaygo County in 1872. It is not known how long she taught, but we know she married Warner Brown in September, 1872 and had her first child in the fall of 1875.
Lydia was always active in church and Sunday school, and conducted a Sunday School in her own home for a number of years in Kingfisher county, Oklahoma. She was the first superintendent of the Rock Creek, Ok. Sunday School when it was organized in 1902. She also worked for better schools, and it was through her efforts that Rock Creek school district was organized and the school house built. Her grandson, George N. Brown told the story of Lydia's aptitude for math, saying that when a man started to build a house he would go to Lydia, and she would then figure out exactly how much lumber he needed. She also helped her grandchildren with their homework in math. Source: Copy of Michigan Teacher's Certificate. Duncan Banner obituary., and George N. Brown.
