a. Note:   Alfred Eugene Pearce aka Gene worked for the E. J. Vance Box Company in Bay City, Michigan. It is probable that he was a sales representative in that he traveled to New York City periodically. Source: Copy of letter in possession of Justine Brown Miller.
 He seemed to be a good husband and father as well as a devoted son. "Gene" as he was called describes himself and his son in a letter as "slow to learn", but that certainly was not the case as Gene was successful and his son Paul did fine in school and took music lessons. Paul taught college and was successful in business as an adult. Daughter Esther was described as the "smart" one, but had alot of what was probably allergy problems and other health problems as a child. His daughter Dorothy was very young when these comments were made in letters.
