  Josephine (Rollins) Sawyer wrote that Elizabeth Gray's father, James Gray, Senior, "Had an interesting rule in his family. It was that no child who happened to be readinbg when some minor chore needed to be done, should be called upon to do that chore, and . . . Elizabeth always had her nose in a book."
