a. Note:   d learned with his brother-in-law Ockenfels the tanning trade. At the completion of his learning by custom he went on a journey. He went to Saarbr�cken and Mannheim and then to Bavaria and Austria. From Vienna he turned towards Prague and Dresden and then went to Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Hannover, Kassel and Frankfort am Main where he took a steamship to Cologne. Shortly he undertook another trip to France where he remained mainly in Versailles and Paris for 5 years and acquired a good command of the French language. After his return he oo Maria Brabender of the Cloister Essig. The couple inherited the Nonnenhof from his father and after that they undertook farming. In Esch Johann was the head of the municipality for decades.
