In 1780, Godfrey served in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Company, 4th Class Philadelphia City Militia under Lt. Col. Benjamin Eyre together with George Reybold, brother of his future first wife, Sara Reybold. Between 1789-1794 there are no baptismal records found for the following children of Godfrey Bender - Charles, Sarah, Henry, and Godfrey, Jr. - at either St. Michaels Evangelical Lutheran nor Germantown Reformed (Market Square). Also missing is the marriage record for Godfrey and his second wife, Christianna. Godfrey Bender is missing from the 1790 census. On the death record for son, J. Henry Bender, his birthplace is listed as Greensburg, which is in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. According to Revolutionary War pension records, Godfreys brother, Jacob Bender, moved to Greensburg and died there in 1814. Could Godfrey and Sara Bender have moved their family to Greensburg for a short time? No record for the family has been located in records of Westmoreland County Lutheran and Reformed churches held by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. ------ * probate: Philadelphia Will Book 7 Part C: In the name of God Amen, I Godfrey Bender of Penn Township, Philadelphia County Pennsylvania, House Carpenter being weak in Body but of Perfect mind and Understanding and considering the uncertainty of this Transitory Life do make and ordain this as my last will and Testament and concerning the worldly Effects where with it Pleased the Lord to Bless me I dispose of in the following manner and form viz First - It is my will that after my decease my herein after named do give me decent Burial pay all my funeral Charges and Just debts Second - I do give and bequeath unto my Beloved wife all my Estate both Real and Personal And Lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my Beloved to be my Execut for carrying the foregoing and I do hereby further impower my wife to do with my Estate as proper In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Seventeenth day of September in the year of Our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and twenty two.
